It took M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin to finally knock off Avatar: The Way of Water from its top position at the box office after seven weeks.

And James Cameron’s Avatar 2 did not just drop to second place but fell to third because another movie, 80 for Brady, performed strongly and took the number two spot. In fact, box office analysts say that Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Rita Moreno, and Lily Tomlin’s movie actually beat Knock at the Cabin in terms of attendance figures.

More people saw the sports comedy but its tickets were priced lower than those of Shyamalan’s latest horror-mystery-thriller.

While Knock at the Cabin fared below box office experts’ prediction, Shyamalan can still claim to have a seventh movie to debut at the top and for this film to be the first one to premiere in first place in 2023.

The apocalyptic film, also written by Shyamalan, based on Paul Tremblay’s novel, “The Cabin at the End of the World,” grossed $14.2 million, significantly down from the earlier forecast of $20 million.

Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint, Jonathan Groff, and Kristen Cui headline the cast of the movie that chronicles how a girl and her parents on a vacation are held hostage by armed strangers who force the family to make a choice to prevent the apocalypse.

In welcome news for films aimed at older women, 80 for Brady, based on a group of real-life senior female fans of Tom Brady (he also produced the movie) and his New England Patriots who travel to watch their idols in the 2017 Super Bowl, made $12.5 million.

The Avatar sequel still made a hefty $10.8 million.

After seven weeks, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is still going strong, landing fourth with a $7.95 million take and a domestic total of $151.2 million so far.

Proving their continuing appeal, BTS made an impact on the box office charts with their BTS: Yet to Come in Cinemas, which placed fifth. The on-screen concert experience, filmed at the phenomenally popular band’s live October 2022 show in Busan, collected $6.3 million.

Tom Hanks’ A Man Called Otto ($4.1 million), M3GAN ($3.8 million) and Missing ($3.7 million) ranked sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

Notable is The Chosen: Season 3, the final two episodes of the hit series on Jesus, which cracked the top ten and made it to number nine. Shown in theaters due to demand, the Fathom Events release drew $3.64 million. As a result, the theatrical screening of the series’ last two season 3 episodes, scheduled to run February 2 and 3 only, has been extended to February 6.

Pathaan claimed the tenth spot with $2.7 million.

Overseas, as predicted, Avatar 2 surpassed Cameron’s own Titanic to become the third biggest all-time hit offshore. Grossing an impressive $1.538 billion, the sequel is now behind the filmmaker’s original Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.

But the biggest news internationally is Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan still setting records. With $95.1 million under its belt, Pathaan, featuring the Indian superstar, claimed the title of the biggest-grossing Bollywood film globally except in China. In the world’s biggest movie market, a dubbed version of Dangal made $193 million. But as a film released in the original Hindi language, Pathaan is number one.

In its home country, the King of Bollywood’s movie, co-starring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, gained bragging rights as the first original Hindi movie to hit the 400-crore net benchmark.
