Black Widow smashed domestic box office records but the other big news was that Disney, for the first time, disclosed Disney Plus Premiere Access’ earnings from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment on its streaming premiere.

In a rare move, Disney announced that director Cate Shortland’s Natasha Romanoff standalone film grossed $60 million in streaming revenues on Disney Plus. Disney has never revealed the dollar earnings of its movies on Disney Plus until this previous weekend.

The movie’s $80 million earnings in theaters were enough to surpass F9’s earlier record as having the biggest opening figures of the pandemic era and the largest since Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz, was predicted by box office analysts to draw higher figures. But nevertheless, the movie’s grosses highlighted the fan demand for MCU fare.

Justin Lin’s high-octane sequel F9 dropped to second place with $10.88 million take at the turnstiles. Coming in third was Tom McGrath’s animation sequel, The Boss Baby: Family Business, with $8.7 million.

Everardo Gout’s action-horror-thriller, The Forever Purge, took the fourth berth with $6.71 million. John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place Part II, still going strong on its seventh weekend, hauled in $3 million to add to the sequel’s cumulative take of $150.69 million. That overall total marks the biggest domestic earning so far by a Hollywood movie released during the COVID-19 health crisis.

Rounding out the top ten were Craig Gillespie’s Cruella ($2.2. million), Patrick Hughes’ The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard ($1.61 million), Will Gluck’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway ($1.25 million), Jon M. Chu’s In the Heights ($630,000) and Michael Chaves’ The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It ($615,000).

These movies helped the United States and Canada’s box office go past the $100 million mark in total earnings over three days for the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic times.

Internationally, Black Widow’s $78.8 million revenue almost matched the superhero film’s North American box office haul. The movie still does not have a release date in China, the world’s biggest film market. In the meantime, the 24^th movie in the MCU topped the box office charts in countries where it debuted, including the United Kingdom, Mexico, Korea, France and Australia.

As predicted, F9 crossed $400 million in the overseas market with the weekend’s figures at $13.6 million. Two films, Guy Ritchie’s Wrath of Man and Peter Rabbit 2, hit the $100 million global benchmark.

Joel Crawford’s pandemic movie success story, The Croods: A New Age, premiered in several film markets to increase its international earnings to $123.4 million. Also doing well with the addition of overseas territories was The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It which now boasts of an offshore cumulative of $119.7 million.

Hollywood is counting on several coming releases to continue jumpstarting the box office action back to its pre-pandemic level. These movies include Paramount Pictures’ Snake Eyes, Warner Brothers’ Space Jam: A New Legacy, DC Extended Universe’s The Suicide Squad and Disney’s Jungle Cruise.
