He is considered to be the biggest star in the world. He has even been flirting with the idea of running for President some day. But in the meantime The Rock, also known as Dwayne Johnson, has been humbled by a bunch of silly animated vampires, as Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation crushed Skyscraper. By adding 44 overseas markets ( it was No.1 in 33 of those) to the domestic gross, Hotel Transylvania reached the $100 million mark. The latest film by The Rock, a hero with a prosthetic leg,  was good instead for just $40 million out of 57 overseas markets and $25 million domestically, where it was beaten also by Disney and Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp which took the No. 2 spot with $28.8 million. 

Potential moviegoers had many distractions in the past few days, including the World Cup and Wimbledon finals, but at Sony everyone is elated. In the third installment of Hotel Transylvania,  Dracula takes a cruise and falls in love with its captain. Dracula is voiced again by Adam Sandler,  and the voice cast includes Andy Samberg, Kathryn Hahn, and Selena Gomez, who carries with her huge social media power: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter bring to her 250 million followers, more than Dwayne Johnson at 180 million. Hotel Transylvania has yet to open in major markets such as France, the UK, Germany, and Korea, and a China date has not been set. Skyscraper will instead open in China this coming week and its hopes are now pinned on the Middle Kingdom, where earlier this year, with Rampage, Dwayne Johnson was able to produce $ 156 million. A repeat of that major success, however, may be an issue, as Dwayne Johnson may be suffering from overexposure. At Christmas, he was in Jumanji, and Skyscraper is the actor’s fifth film in 14 months. Also, next week he will have to contend with Denzel Washington in Equalizer 2 and then, on July 27, is Tom Cruise’s turn with Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Ant-Man and the Wasp continues to do well and is considerably ahead of its first installment, with a domestic total of  $132.8 million. Overseas, Ant-Man and the Wasp took in another $35.3 million for a foreign total of $150.9 million and $283.7 million globally. There are still several markets to open and the latest Marvel blockbuster is set to pass the first Ant-Man, which ended its run with  $519 million.

Incredibles 2 opened in the UK this past week, where it was good for $12 million and it has become the top-grossing animated picture of all time, with a global gross of $857 million. With major territories like Korea still to open, its top markets so far are China with $ 51 million,  Mexico with $ 36 million and Australia with $29,5 million. 

Domestically, the latest Pixar success added $16 million, for a total so far of $536 million. Jurassic Word: Fallen Kingdom was just behind, with $15,5  million. The Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly tentpole keeps doing sound business internationally. It enjoyed a Japan debut of  $12 million. It has been extended an extra month in Chinese theaters and its global gross, $ 1,135 million so far, keeps growing.

Back on US soil, Eight Grade managed to squeeze $252,284 out of just 4 theaters in Los Angeles and New York. That’s over $ 63,000 per screen, taking over from Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs the title of the film with the best opening screen average of 2018.  Also, Gus Van Sant’s Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, starring Joaquin Phoenix, debuted in four theaters, for a screen average of $20,780. 

Finally, in China, the dramedy Dying to Survive keeps doing great business. In its second week, it added $ 68 million, for a gross, so far, of $366 million.
