World Box Office June 11-20, 2021

Before F9: The Fast Saga speeds up to the domestic box office race this week, Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek’s The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard hit the bullseye in North America and emerged number one.

On the Father’s Day weekend when Los Angeles and New York allowed movie houses to open at their 100 percent capacity, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard – an action-comedy – earned $11.68 million. Director Patrick Hughes’s sequel to his 2017 sleeper hit, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, also stars Antonio Banderas, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman.

A Quiet Place Part II stayed loud and clear at the box office, scaring up $9.4 million to grab second place. John Krasinski’s sequel, the first Hollywood movie to cross the $100 million mark in the coronavirus pandemic era after only three weeks, has now grossed $125.26 million.

Speaking of that milestone, Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong has just reached the $100 mil benchmark, becoming the second American movie to do so domestically.

Still, on a weekend in which 43 states have fully opened their film theater doors, and eliminated COVID-19 period capacity restrictions, Will Gluck’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway hopped to the third berth as it took in $6.1 million for cumulative earnings so far of $20.33 million.

In fourth and fifth spots were Michael Chaves’ The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and Craig Gillespie’s Cruella with $5.15 million and $5.1 million, respectively.

Despite its glowing reviews, Jon M. Chu’s In the Heights dropped to number six with $4.21 million. Although it’s the type of joyous film that’s best enjoyed in the communal environment of a movie house, In the Heights is probably being seen by more families at home instead since it’s also being streamed on HBO Max.

Raking in $1.6 million and occupying the seventh spot was Elaine Bogan and Ennio Torresan’s animated adventure, Spirit Untamed.

On its sophomore weekend, Ty Roberts’ 12 Mighty Orphans scored $870,000, good enough for an eighth-place finish. The period sports drama, about a high school football coach who motivates a team of orphans to become a state champion during the Great Depression, features Luke Wilson, Robert Duvall, Vinessa Shaw, Martin Sheen, and Treat Williams.

Deon Taylor’s comedy-horror, The House Next Door: Meet the Blacks 2 with Mike Epps, Katt Williams, and Bresha Webb, drew $604,400 to land ninth place.

Completing the top ten was Michael Lembeck’s Queen Bees which took in $275,000. The comedy’s cast includes Ellen Burstyn, Ann-Margret, Loretta Devine, Jane Curtin, Christopher Lloyd, James Caan, and Alec Mapa.

Internationally, Justin Lin’s F9 again dominated the race. The penultimate installment to Vin Diesel’s blockbuster franchise attracted $19.08 million as it neared the $300 million benchmark in its overseas earnings.

A Quiet Place 2 is also still making a lot of noise in the offshore charts with $15.7 million, with a $96.7 million total that gives the Emily Blunt horror-drama a shot at also crossing the $100 million mark overseas.

The other horror hit, The Conjuring 3, raised $12.4 million for overall international sales of $89.2 million that makes it another potential member of the $100 million club in the offshore market. Cruella is closer to hitting that mark after its $12 million earnings added to the prequel’s $95.2 million international cumulative tally.

Pixar’s Luca, whose release in the United States was changed from theatrical to streaming only via Disney Plus, is finding life inside cineplexes abroad. Enrico Casarosa’s Italian Riviera-set animated tale about the friendship between a human being and a sea monster passing himself off as a human earned $5 million in several overseas territories.

Voiced by Jacob Tremblay, Maya Rudolph, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Emma Berman, Luca debuted at the top in Russia.
