World Box Office June 18 – 24, 2018

After roaring freely over foreign territories for two weeks, the fierce and scary dinos of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom landed in the US. The reviews were not exactly stellar. The box office was 28% lower than three years ago, when the first chapter of the new series launched by Steven Spielberg back in 1993 generated $208 million. But $150 million on the first weekend is not a number to sneeze at. And with $711 million already grossed on a global scale, the new Jurassic is on his way to join the suddenly not so rarefied billion-dollar club. The tale of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard back to Isla Nublar generated an extra $32.4 million in China, bringing the total in the Middle Kingdom to $202 million. Korea stands at $43 million, followed by the UK with $42 million and France and Germany just below $20 million.

Fallen Kingdom dislodged Incredibles 2 from the top spot in the domestic market, but the Pixar production added $81.9 million, the biggest second weekend ever for an animated film. It stands domestically at $350 million, while foreign markets are good so far $135 million. Chinese audiences clearly favored Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but a $21 million debut is still the biggest ever for a Pixar film. Mexico is good so far for $23.5 million, Australia for $15M, Russia for $10.5M. India generated $3 million. And with most of Western Europe, Korea and Japan still to open, Incredibles 2 still has much room to grow.

While the contest between the dinos and the incredible Parr family dominated the world markets, other productions were able to celebrate. Ocean’s 8, in its third weekend, crossed the $100 million mark domestically, adding $11.7 million. Overseas it added $27 million. It opened in Russia with $2.7 million, in Germany with $1.8 million. The all-female heist caper, led by Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, has not opened yet in key markets such as Japan, Italy and Spain. With a worldwide gross so far of $172 million, it may end up in the $250 million range.

Warner’s other comedy, the R-rated Tag, generated $8.2 million in its second week for a $30 million total Another R-rated comedy, the superhero sequel Deadpool 2, keeps generating solid business after six weeks of release. It crossed the $300 million mark domestically, overseas is at over $400 million. With Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a mouth, Deadpool 2 is now the fourth biggest R-rated film of all time, behind Matrix ReloadedWolf Warrior 2 and the original Deadpool.

There is not much to celebrate for Gotti. On its second week of release, the biopic about mob boss John Gotti starring John Travolta was good for just $812,000, for a domestic total of $3.3 million. Also, Boundaries, starring Vera Farmiga and Christopher Plummer, had a bad start. The production also stars Peter Fonda, who made headlines with a controversial tweet related to Barron Trump, President Donald Trump’s 11-year-old son. First lady Melania Trump alerted the Secret Service, Donald Trump Jr. challenged Sony to pull the movie. Boundaries did just $30,000 on its debut, a figure most likely unaffected by the controversy.
