World Box Office, March 7-13

After bouncing to the top of the charts in its US debut last weekend Disney's Zootopia held on to the top spot once again, taking in $50 million in its sophomore frame. The animated caper in which Big Love star Ginnifer Goodwin voices Judy Hopps, the first rabbit in the anthropomorphic Zootopia Police Department, dropped just 33% in its second weekend in domestic theatres. At $142.6 million its domestic cume is bigger than Frozen's was at this point in its release, and roughly on par with Pixar's Finding Nemo. Overseas Zootopia jumped up an incredible 25%, all without opening in any new markets. It made $56.5million in China alone, 139% more than it did in its debut last frame. At $109 million it is now the studio's biggest release in the Middle Kingdom, and is closing in on animated leaders Kung Fu Panda 3 ($149 million) and local hit Monkey King: Hero is Back ($153 million.) It rose 17% to take the number one spot it South Korea with a cume of $14.7 million, and now stands at $23.8 million in France, $20.6 million in Russia, $14 million in Mexico and a noteworthy $6.3 million in Argentina.

Zootopia will take a hit from The Divergent Series: Allegiant at home next week, but should continue to dominate overseas where it has already shown that it can keep the Shailene Woodley thriller at bay. In this latest entry in the Divergent Series heroine Tris (Woodley) ventures outside of Chicago for the first time ever and encounters a world even more dangerous and deceitful than the one behind the walls of their embattled dystopia. Allegiant earned $26.7 million from its overseas launch in 45 markets.

Newcomer 10 Cloverfield Lane got off to a decent start in the US and Canada with a $25.2 million debut. It stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a woman trapped in a basement by two men (John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr.) who are convinced that America has suffered a devastating chemical attack. Directed by newcomer Dan Trachtenberg and produced by J.J. Abrams, the films is billed as a “spiritual successor” to Abrams’ 2008 found-footage style hit Cloverfield. It made just $1.5 million from six foreign territories but looks to up that number next frame as it rolls into key European markets France, Spain, and the UK.

Fellow domestic opener The Brothers Grimsby didn't build nearly as much hype as 10 Cloverfield in its pre-release campaign and found itself with a disastrous launch as a result. In this British-American spy comedy, distributed by Columbia, Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong star as a pair of brothers who are adopted by different families after the death of their parents. Cohen's character becomes an alcoholic football hooligan in the industrial town of Grimsby, while Strong's grows up to be England's deadliest secret agent. They have a comedic reunion and end up uniting to save the world from a bio-terrorist played by Penelope Cruz. With just $3.15 million earned in the US and $3.2 million overseas, including the star's home country, this film marks the lowest opening ever for Baron Cohen.

While this film met an early demise, another picture is rising from the grave thanks to a strong China opening. Lionsgate's Gods of Egypt, which earned a humiliating domestic debut of just $14.2 million, is making up some ground after a welcome $19.5 million launch in the Middle Kingdom. This $150 million CGI-heavy epic still has considerasble ground to cover if it wants to sneak into the red, but with a global cumulative that now sits at $109 million it has an outside chance of making it.

Deadpool meanwhile reached a $328 million total and $708 million worldwide, and London Has Fallen arrived at a cume of $68.2 million.

Next week we'll keep an eye on Divergent's domestic release and see if it can unseat Zootopia, as well as reporting on who can bring in their last scraps of notable profit before Batman vs. Superman storms into theatres over Easter weekend.
