World Box Office May 10-16, 2021

A movie in which Chris Rock switches from comedy to horror spiraled to the top of the domestic box office.

Spiral, whose original full title is Spiral: From the Book of Saw, catapulted to number one with $8.73 million. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, the ninth installment of the Saw movie franchise also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, Morgan David Jones, Ali Johnson, and Marisol Nichols.

Jason Statham’s Wrath of Man, directed by Guy Ritchie, dropped to second place with $3.74 million.

On its weekend debut, Angelina Jolie’s Those Who Wish Me Dead, directed by Taylor Sheridan, settled for third ranking. The neo-Western action-drama-thriller’s $2.8 million opening was soft by Jolie standards, although the moviegoing business is still admittedly not back 100 percent due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In fourth place was the anime film, Demon Slayer, which earned $1.85 million. Japan’s all-time box office champ has now cumulatively earned $42.03 million in the North American market. Globally, Demon Slayer has amassed $456 million in ticket sales.

Another animation film, Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, has earned a total of $46.12 million after raking in $1.72 million in the past weekend.

Godzilla vs. Kong ($1.46 million) and Mortal Kombat (1.32 million) were still hanging on to their top 10 places.

Cracking the magic 10 was Brian Baugh’s Finding You, a romance drama that debuted at number eight with $945,000. Katherine McNamara, Jedidiah Goodacre and Vanessa Redgrave anchor this film about a gifted promising violinist and a young movie star.

Another premiering film, Profile, a thriller about a British journalist, directed by Timur Bekmambetov, drew $670,000. The mystery-thriller features Valene Kane, Shazad Latif and Christine Adams.

Here Today, a comedy directed by Billy Crystal, starring Crystal, Sharon Stone, Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Kline, Penn Badgley, and Laura Benanti, collected $530,000.

Internationally, Wrath of Man was still forceful, drawing $41.4 million in ticket sales for a total of $56 million globally. The action-thriller, which Ritchie wrote with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, is predicted to continue doing well at the box office, especially in the big film markets – Russia, China, and Korea – where Statham has a solid following.

Spiral was also strong overseas with $3.3 million.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway expanded to other territories after making a box office splash in New Zealand and Australia. The animation/live action hybrid, voiced by James Corden, Elizabeth Debicki, Margot Robbie, Rose Byrne and David Oyelowo, bowed at number one in Mexico and Russia.

The Will Gluck-directed sequel netted $3.1 million for cumulative earnings of $21.1 million.

After being released in more than 30 overseas markets, Jolie’s Those Who Wish Me Dead took in $7.1 million so far, after earning $2.8 million in the last weekend.

In Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, Disney’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Amazon’s Them held on tight to their first and second berths, respectively.

The rest of the Top 10 streaming shows are The Circle, Dad, Stop Embarrassing Me, The Crown, This is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist, The Serpent, Who Killed Sarah?, The Greatest British Baking Show and Family Reunion.
