World Box Office May 8 to 14, 2023

Those lovable misfits and outcasts kept a tight guard on the box office champion throne. On its second weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stayed at the top with an estimated $60.5 million.

Pundits declared those figures as among the best sophomore frame earnings for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Going in the James Gunn threequel’s favor is its high audience score.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the moviegoers’ rating for the film starring Chris Pratt, Chukwudi Iwuji, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff and Karen Gillan, with a voice cast led by Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Maria Bakalova, is 95%. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s two-week total is $213.2 million.

Pratt kept his 1-2 reign in the box office as his The Super Mario Bros. Movie hung on to second place. The movie’s robust $13 million haul, even after six weeks, boosted its milestone as the fourth highest-grossing animated film ever in the global box office pantheon. Domestic six-week tally is $535.9 million.

The Nintendo game adaptation, also tapping the voice talents of Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Charlie Day, Kevin Michael Richardson and Seth Rogen, has also become Universal Pictures’ number one animated hit worldwide, leaping past Minions.

Book Club: The Next Chapter, an alternative to the male-skewing top two movies, and capitalizing on the Mother’s Day weekend, grabbed the third spot with $6.5 million.

In the sequel to the 2018 film, the four friends, played by Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, head off to Italy. Andy Garcia, Don Johnson and Craig T. Nelson are back as well. The ladies’ book club gets more interesting with the addition of Giancarlo Giannini as a police chief.

Evil Dead Rise, one of the season’s hits, took the fourth berth with $3.7 million. After four weeks, the horror tale directed by Lee Cronin and produced by Sam Raimi has collected a solid $60.1 million.

Rachel McAdams and Kathy BatesAre You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. collected $2.5 million, enough to edge out Robert Rodriguez’s Hypnotic and land in the top five.

The action mystery thriller, Hypnotic, bowed in sixth place instead with $2.3 million. Ben Affleck stars as a detective who investigates his daughter’s disappearance as well as a mysterious government program.

Alice Braga, Jackie Earle Hailey, Dayo Okeniyi, William Fichtner and JD Pardo also top-bill the movie written by Rodriguez with Max Borenstein.

Rounding out the rest of the top ten were, in order: Keanu Reeves’ John Wick: Chapter 4, $1.93 million; Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan and Celine Dion’s Love Again, $1.55 million; Air, Ben Affleck’s other film in the magic ten, $875,000; and Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez and Rege-Jean Page’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, $740,000.

Overseas, Guardians Vol. 3 is king as well. James Gunn’s last hurrah in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (he leaves Marvel to become the new creative head of DC studios) has picked up a total of $315.6 million for a worldwide cume of $528.8 million.

China leads the offshore market for the movie with $58.4 million so far.

Meanwhile, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has become the 24th highest grossing film ever worldwide. After earning $674.4 million so far in international territories, the animated tale about two plumber brothers has chalked up global earnings of $1.21 billion.
