All of this weekend's newcomers struggled to stay afloat as Moana left the competitors in its wake for the second frame in a row. Disney’s Dwayne Johnson led high seas adventure earned $28.7 million in its return frame, reaching a domestic cumulative of $119.8 million and cementing itself as yet another huge win for Hollywood’s most profitable studio. On the international scene, Moana added $32 million from 30 territories. It opened second in the UK behind Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with $2.7 million and made $5.1 million in a big French debut. Its Russian outing was worth $5.1 million while in Mexico the film placed first with $2.7 million. Its notable weak spot is China, where it made just $5.5 million and has a disappointing total of roughly $17.2 million. Moana’s next major openings are in Germany and Italy in two weeks. Then comes Japan, where Frozen, the biggest animated film of all time, stayed on top of the chart for months and made an astonishing $249 million.

While the domestic chart offered little in the way of shakeups, China instead saw the birth of a new anime phenomenon in Japanese picture Your Name, which opened with $41 million and scored this weekend’s best performance in a single market worldwide. YN tells the story of a young boy and girl who upon the appearance of a magical comet that passes over Japan every thousand years begin transporting into each other’s bodies. After getting over the initial shock, they start to send each other messages by writing on the other’s arms and leaving photos on their cell phones. Makoto Shinkai, the film’s writer and director, made a name for himself across various mediums including erotic thrillers for the PlayStation game system. Your Name, his biggest project to date, has now made $243 million worldwide.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them still enjoyed this frames biggest combined take with $60.4 million overseas and $18.5 million at home. Beasts reached $47.1 million in its second home market, the UK, while Korea is at $30.1 million to date. Its German gross reached $27.3 million, while Russia is at $19.8 million and the Italian box office ran up to $14.1 million. As for China, Beasts added another $15.5 million and after two weeks its total in the Middle Kingdom is now at $72 million. Beasts now sits at $609 million worldwide. It’s still behind The Prisoner of Azkaban, the weakest of the eight Harry Potter films, but could pass its $796 million global haul in the coming weeks.

New international opener Underworld: Blood Wars made its first stop in 51 foreign territories and gobbled up $16.3 million for its trouble. Blood Wars sees Kate Beckinsale return as Selene in the final chapter of Sony’s long running vampire vs. werewolf series.

On the specialty market new opener Jackie, directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy, earned the seventh best per-theatre average of the year at $55,000.00 split between LA and New York art houses. Manchester by the Sea, from Roadside Attractions and Amazon and perceived as an awards contender, moved into 156 locations and earned $2.36 million in its thirds outing.

Next weekend will have several big offerings in Damien Chazelle’s much anticipated La La Land, Jason Bateman comedy Office Christmas Party, and Jessica Chastain led political thriller Miss Sloane.
