Italian American director Jonas Carpignano’s A Ciambra won a Directors Fortnight prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was acquired for distribution by IFC’s Sundance Select label. It is a film steeped in the Italian neorealist tradition as well as modern documentary influenced dramas (think Andrea Arnold’s American Honey or Chloe Zhao’s The Rider, also at Cannes this year).

Oprah Winfrey is the recipient of the Cecil B. deMille Award of the 75th Golden Globes.

Timothée Chalamet, this year s acting sensation with a fresh Golden Globe nomination for best actor for his starring role in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name is extremely enthusiastic about how music helps him with his craft:“Music plays a really, really, really big role in all of the acting I do.   For the fireplace scene in this film (Call Me By Your Name) I had a little earpiece, that's playing the song (Sufjan Stevens’ “Visions of Gideon”) the entire time so it kind of it gave sort of the mechanism or barometer by which to know okay, how is this song going, where are the arcs of the song here.

Another slow pre–Star Wars weekend saw Coco – a nominee for the Golden Globe of Best Animated Picture -  take first place again both in the US and overseas, while James Franco’s The Disaster Artist scored big at home with a push into 840 theatres. TDA,  which received two Golden Globe Nominations, Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy and  Best Actor – Musical or Comedy for James Franco-  made $6.

Nominations for the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning from the Beverly Hilton Hotel by presenters Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Bell, and Sharon Stone, with, Hollywood Foreign Press Association president, Meher Tatna, and executive vice president of television at dick clark productions, Barry Adelman. Big Little Lies leads the TV categories with six nominations, while The Shape of Water takes the top position in the film section, with seven nominations.

The 90s are the breakout decade for Julia Roberts, who wins a Globe for Pretty Woman shooting to superstardom. And Tom Cruise, whose Hollywood stature is confirmed at the very beginning of the decade with Born on the Fourth of July, also worthy of a Golden Globe.

A movie Steven Spielberg would like to forget. For the Hollywood Foreign Press, it wasn’t a problem.

The opening is stunning, breathtaking and spectacularly tragic: the bloodbath on Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944. The first 28 minutes of Saving Private Ryan are something to experience and rightly considered one of the most unnerving and realistic in war movie history.

The film has been described as “Romeo and Juliet on a sinking ship”, and what a spectacular sinking it was.

It would prove a prophetic title for Helen Hunt, who won not only the Golden Globe but the Academy Award as well for her performance in this Golden Globe award-winning film. Unfortunately, her career from then on was all downhill.
