DC and Warner Bros. ' superhero comedy Shazam! kicked off its US run with a thoroughly impressive $53 million opening weekend.

CinemaCon, held annually at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada, is a gathering of theater owners and exhibitors (as well as the concessionaires and technology companies whose products undergird their business) from all across the United States and around the world. And so each spring Hollywood movie studios and top film talent alight upon the convention, to talk up their upcoming film slates and get exhibitors excited about their cinematic offerings.

Disney's live-action remake of Dumbo made it out of the circus tent this weekend with a far from spectacular $45 million launch. Coming 78 years after the classic cartoon feature's 1941 release, Tim Burton's version is perhaps even more kid-friendly than the original, doing without thing's like the young elephant's psychedelic drinking experience and the not so subtly racist jive speaking Jim Crow crows.
