On stage at the 33rd Golden Globes, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Saturday, January 24, 1976, producer Michael Douglas accepts a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Drama for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, from presenter Gena Rowlands. His father Kirk Douglas had bought the rights to the 1962 novel by Ken Kesey and produced it in 1963 as a musical play on Broadway, playing the title role that Jack Nicholson would play in the movie version.

There is probably no better place for a classic film festival than Lyon, France. After all, it’s the hometown of brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière who developed the Cinematographe projector and whose Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory in Lyon, a 46-second documentary first shown in 1895, is considered the first motion picture ever made.

The movie that the New Orleans Film Festival picked for their opening night could not have been better: director Peter Farrelly's Green Book is based on the true story of African American concert pianist Don Shirley, who decides to tour the Deep South. A great idea except it is 1962 and he needs protection, so the record company hires Italian-American New Yorker Tony “Lip” Vallelonga to drive him around and run interference in dicey situations.

Golden Globe winner Javier Bardem is a huge heavy metal fan. He was excited to reveal what he did this past summer:“I saw Metallica, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Accept, Ozzy Osbourne, Kiss, Iron Maiden twice, and Pearl Jam, in less than a month and a half.

“I’d love to see more women on action movies as a cinematographer; it's lacking for women,” notes Director of Photography Jessica Lee Gagne, who, like a lot of women, has been questioned if the action genre is a place women should be. Is the bias justified? By way of a reply the Canadian shares that on one of her projects, “I was tied to a crane, running on a rooftop after the action, with a camera on my back.

HFPA GranteeOne of the more recent  HFPA grants went to a very worthy and too often misunderstood group of people. The Veterans in Film and Television is an organization based in Los Angeles that was founded only six years ago.
