Road to the 73rd Golden Globes: Run Up to The Red Carpet

Honoring the best in film and television, the 73rd edition of the Golden Globes will take place on January 10 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, and will be broadcast live on NBC. As usual, the red carpet will trasform into a glamorous gathering of stars greeting each other and catching up and reporters asking that ubiquitous question: 'Who are you wearing?' Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman/George and Amal Clooneyhfpa In a field where actors portray other people and are dressed to capture the character, the red carpet has become a form of personal expression, particularly for actresses who showcase individual fashion choices.

Lily Tomlin

Lily Tomlin is a double nominee as Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Grandma directed by Paul Weitz, and Best Actress in a TV Series Comedy for Grace and Frankie, where she co-stars with Jane Fonda, her friend since she convinced Lily to star with her and Dolly Parton in 9 to 5 (1980), a film that Fonda produced. Tomlin started her career as a stand-up comedian and became famous for the characters she created on the television variety show Laugh-In (1969-1973), such as Ernestine the telephone operator and Edith Ann the 5-year-old girl sitting in a chair.

In 1954, A Memorable Golden Globe

How about we travel back to January 22, 1954, and a very special Golden Globe ceremony held at Club Del Mar in Santa Monica, California? Grace Kelly won a Globe as best supporting actress for her work in Mogambo, and received it from the hands of Robert Taylor and Eleanor Parker. Spencer Tracy won the best actor Golden Glove for his performance in The Actress (he seems absolutely intrigued by Grace Kelly in this photo…) What made the gala unique: it was co-sponsored by the HFCA and the FPAH, the two organizations that, one year later, would merge to form the HFPA.

Paul Dano

Paul Dano, 32, receives his first Golden Globe nomination as Best supporting actor for portraying composer and Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson as a young man in Love & Mercy directed by Bill Pohlad, while John Cusack plays him in the later years when he was fighting mental illness. Dano talked to HFPA about this experience: “In the spirit of Brian, I did try to summon any ghosts or angels that might come visit us, because he felt connected to something bigger than himself, while he was in the studio recording Pet Sounds back in the 60s.
