This weekend was all about a killer doll as New Line’s Annabelle: Creation took over the US box office and finished first with $35 million. This origin story to their wildly successful The Conjuring series gets into the background of how the doll was made and picked up its terrible curses that result in a torturous death for anybody unlucky enough to own it.

Patterns have moved beyond a trend. They are having their moment in the spotlight on men and women.

In 1980 director Mark Rydell’s The Rose launched Bette Midler’s career in earnest and garnered five Golden Globe nominations, including two Globes for Middler and a Best Song Award for Amanda McBroom’s titular song. Amanda was born in Burbank, August 9, 1947, the daughter of film star of the 1940s David Bruce and a drama teacher.

Robert Pattinson will soon be seen in a challenging role in the upcoming movie Good Times, yet another meaty role that seems designed to erase the heartthrob status that he collected with the Twilight trilogy. The English actor was an aspiring musician, skillful on guitar and keyboards, before he became an actor.

In an unusually slow weekend of peak summer box office season Sony’s The Dark Tower landed in first, albeit on shaky foundations. Their $60 million adaptation of Stephen King’s widely read horror series took $19.

Interesting time in fashion. The range of choices is wider than it’s ever been, and while trends are becoming established, old staples and fresh evolutions continue to inspire.

It was an inspiring experience when fellow HFPA colleague and journalist Elisabeth Sereda and I were invited to visit the LAUSD/USC Media Arts & Engineering Magnet High School to participate in a 'Women in Film' panel. Only the female students were invited to the event held in the school’s auditorium and energy was high from the moment we arrived.

The stars joined us in the exclusive HFPA studio for a special portrait prior to donating more than $2. 8 million in grants and scholarships at our annual Grants Banquet.
