With the sun finally shining brightly over the Excelsior cabanas on Lido beach (and on the hordes of harried reporters rushing between screenings), the Venice festival is nearing its first weekend and gathering steam. One of the themes that is emerging from this edition is that of moral choices, and their consequences.

It's fair to say the Venice Film Festival is one of cinema’s grand dames. The festival which is in its 71st edition at the Lido, is Europe’s oldest, and with Cannes, probably one of the world’s most prestigious.

The Venice Film Festival started with a bang with the opening night screening of a film that puts contenders in the coming awards-season on notice. Following his friend and countryman Alfonso Cuarón’s auspicious debut at last year’s festival with Gravity, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman opened to very positive reactions at the Lido’s Palazzo del Cinema.

Emmy’s red carpet was a testament to restraint. Monochromatic long gowns with asymmetrical twists, and an emphasis on waists, were the evening’s trend.
