Congratulations to HFPA member Juliette Michaud, whose magnificent coffee table book, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has just been published in the U. S.

The 29th edition of the Guadalajara Film Festival concluded last week with Mexican director’s Nicolas Echeverria’s Echo of the Mountain and Argentine Matias Lucchesi’s Natural Sciences respectively winning the Mezcal Prize and best picture, screenplay and actress in the festival’s Latin-American Competition. The Brazilian A Wolf at the Door, by Fernando Coimbra took best director, Marcelo Gomes and Cao Guimaraes’ Man of the Crowd won the special jury prize and cinematography (for Ivo Lopes Araujo), and Daniel Ribeiro’s The Way He Looks took the audience award.

1913 was a momentous year in Los Angeles. The oil fields were booming, William Mulholland opened the Los Angeles Aqueduct that brought life-giving water to the sleepy hamlet from the faraway Eastern Sierras and in a modest barn-turned-film-studio Hollywood’s first feature-length film was being shot.

With the continued growth in serialized fiction and now the exploding diversification in digital and streaming platforms, the "television" landscape is literally changing under everyone's eyes. So much so that the industry in some respects is struggling to keep pace with the changing formats, genres and definitions.

The Cartagena Film Festival is the largest and oldest in South America and celebrates mostly Latin American films. The 54th Edition of the festival directed by Monika Wagenberg, which just concluded, featured counting 12 South American films in the official competition, most of them premieres.

L. A-based writer-director Carlos Marques’ Long Distance (10,000 Km) swept Spain’s Malaga Film Festival, the country’s biggest showcase of Spanish cinema, scooping its top award, the Golden Biznaga, for best movie, best director, best new screenwriter, a critics’ award and best actress to Natalia Tena (a prize she shared with Elena Anaya for her work in Everybody is Dead’s (Todos están muertos).

Jane Fonda was born Lady Jayne Seymour Fonda on December 21, 1937 in New York. She grew up in Beverly Hills with her movie star father Henry Fonda, so it was perhaps inevitable that she and her younger brother Peter would become actors.

Donald Sutherland was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada on July 17, 1935. He studied at the London Academy of Dramatic Arts and acted in British films until he was cast in The Dirty Dozen (1967) by Robert Aldrich, then moved to Hollywood, where he became a symbol of the counter-culture with films like M*A*S*H (1970) by Robert Altman, Alex in Wonderland (1970) by Paul Mazurski, Kelly’s Heroes (1970) with Clint Eastwood, Start the Revolution Without Me (1970) with Gene Wilder.
