Ireland’s leading film festival is held every year in July in the picturesque tiny town of Galway. In its 26th iteration, the Galway Film Fleadh (is it pronounced Flea? Fleed? No, it’s actually Fla, go figure) brings together film buffs, filmmakers, film students, producers, wannabes, actors, Oscar winners, producers and film students in a six day festival, film market and of course pub crawl.

By the time it had seen just 3 sunsets, this weekend’s number one film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes had earned over $73 million. Leading actor and by this point primate behavior expert Andy Serkis returned in his starring role as Caesar the digitally augmented ape, while Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, and the incomparable Gary Oldman appeared in simple flesh and blood to round out the cast.

The Emmy nominations were announced this morning by the Television Academy Arts and Sciences and we congratulate all nominees. Fargo and Game of Thrones lead the field with strong showings by cable, premium cable and streaming services.

  Our Emmy nominated hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler This year's Golden Globes show, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, has earned two Emmy nominations. Produced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in association with dick clark productions, it is the fourth consecutive year the Globes have been nominated in the Outstanding Special Class Program.

Transformers: Age of Extinction, Paramount’s for lack of a better word, paramount summer hit finished at the top of both the domestic and international charts for the second time since its release last weekend. The 4th of July holiday period was good for $36.

The Southern California Journalism Awards are given by the Los Angeles Press Club, the city’s oldest and most prestigious professional association. The prizes were first awarded in forties when Los Angeles journalism was dominated by the city’s many newspapers, TV was in its infancy, women journalists were rare in mainstream media and minorities, even rarer.

After a tremendous opening run Transformers: Age of Extinction is not just this weekend’s number one movie, but also that of every weekend this year to date. Michael Bay’s fourth installment of the Paramount tent-pole series, revamped with Mark Wahlberg taking the place of recently troubled star Shia Lebouf and the addition of robotic dinosaurs, earned $100 million at the domestic box office.

  It was more than half a century ago when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recognized the chameleon-like acting skills of a newcomer to the big screen. In 1957 the HFPA nominated Eli Wallach for Best Actor Award for his role in Elia Kazan's Baby Doll.

Eli Wallach was an American original and, some would say a national treasure. Born in Brooklyn and with a college degree in education, Wallach came into serious acting relatively late, after serving in World War 2, studying at the Actor’s studio with a generation of great American actors including Marlon Brando and Paul Newman.

Tyrant, a new dramatic series premiering on FX is a reworking of an Israeli format (the country which has already brought us In Treatment and Homeland). A group of HFPA journalists recently traveled to Israel to visit with the production of the show.
