Celine Song
Celine Song (born Sept. 19, 1988, in Seoul, South Korea) immigrated to Canada as a child with her family; she later attended Columbia University, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in playwriting. Her Endlings premiered Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in 2020; the play spotlights immigrant experiences by focusing on elderly female divers in Korea. In 2023, Song made her feature directorial debut with Past Lives, a romantic drama that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was later screened at the Berlin International Film Festival. Past Lives is an exploration of love, fate, and cultural heritage as it follows two childhood friends reconnecting years later after living separate lives in Korea and the United States. She became a double Golden Globes nominee, as writer and director of the film.
