Ethel Merman

Ethel Merman (born as Ethel Agnes Zimmermann on January 16, 1908, in Astoria, Queens; died February 15, 1984, New York City) won a Golden Globe for her starring role in the 1953 Call Me Madam and made several more films, but is best remembered for her Broadway successes. Her breakthrough was in Girl Crazy, (1930), then in 1934 she starred in Cole Porter’s Anything Goes; appeared in the 1936 film version. One of her biggest successes was in Irving Berlin’s 1946 Annie Get Your Gun. On film, she starred in There’s No Business Like Show Business, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), and had a memorable cameo in Airplane! (1980)
