Cannes: High Fashion on the Red Carpet
May 17, 2024
Fashion at the 77th Cannes Film Festival trends towards simplicity, adhering to the understated style established at the Golden Globes in January — which is a harbinger of all subsequent red carpets for the year. Anya Taylor-Joy stopped traffic on the Croisette with a shimmering Dior gown reminiscent of Grace Kelly in “To Catch A Thief.” The “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” action hero wore her hair swept up in a complicated chic chignon. Golden Globe winners Meryl Streep and Juliette Binoche went with solid silks — the former in rich cream, the latter in vibrant red.
Hair was notable in the unseasonable cold that cloistered the Palais prompting talent in three directions — tight up-dos, full and loose — to take advantage of the damp sea air (Naomi Campbell), or slicked back with product (Greta Gerwig), to keep tendrils to a minimum.
