The Style of “Underground”: Ownership and Individuality In A Time Of Struggle
Underground cleverly uses costume to highlight the deconstruction of an individual through ownership and how identity surfaces even in the most dire constraints. Costume designer Karyn Wagner led an incredible crew in the creation of a palette of power and powerless: for instance, the plum throughout connotes the Mistress’s choice to clothe her slaves in a color that matches the decor of her house. Paced with drama and tension, Underground highlights the bravery of those who helped slaves escape to the north, and those who undertook the journey. The huge consequences for both the slaves and those who enabled them required steel nerves and great courage. Human dignity is explored across all races and the costumes highlight the truths of the day. Click the gallery to see history brought to life.
