In Toronto with director Asghar Farhadi’s Everybody Knows, Javier Bardem talks to HFPA journalist Gabriel Lerman about the unique experience of shooting a film in Spain, spoken in Spanish, under the guidance of an Iranian filmmaker.

In 1988 senator Gary Hart launched a presidential campaign that quickly brought him to the front of the fray – only to implode spectacularly when some not very wholesome elements of Hart’s life came to the surface. Golden Globe winning director Jason Reitman tells the tale in The Front Runner, with another Golden Globe winner, Hugh Jackman, as Hart.

Writer/director David Lowery had no other actor but Robert Redford in mind for his version of the true story of Forrest Tucker, the coolest and oldest bank robber that has ever emptied safes in the United States, in The Old Man & The Gun. HFPA journalist Anke Hoffman caught up with Lowery in Toronto, and they discussed the “blurred edges” of fact and legend.

In Paul Dano’s directorial debut, Wildlife (an adaptation of Richard Ford’s novel), Carey Mulligan plays a wife and mother in the 1960s Oregon who sees her life drastically changed when her husband (Jake Gyllenhaal) loses his job. In Toronto, HFPA journalist Helen Hoehne talked with Mulligan about working with friends and exploring a woman’s life in the sixties.

The season has embraced all ranges of turquoise, pink and brinjal, while staple solids remain. Yellow through mustard all the way to brown puce are also flaring.

If there was any doubt that a new palette is being showcased along with the usual staples, the red carpet of the HFPA/InStyle party at The Toronto International Film Festival introduced fresh hues and confirmed again that it is a forerunner of trends to come.
