2019 Sundance Film Festival News

The reviewers who wrote about Official Secrets after its Sundance premiere must have left by the time the credits finished rolling and the director of the film, Golden Globe nominee and Oscar winner Gavin Hood, came out to the stage. What followed was very impressive.

This year’s Sundance film fest left no one wanting. While in previous years there was all too often a focus on “edgy” fare, the kind that sometimes becomes a critical darling without attracting audiences, the variety of genres represented in and out of competition this year was wide and all-inclusive.

Norwegian director Anne Sewitsky is no newcomer to Sundance. This is the third time the director is in Park City to present a feature film.

Alice Waddington’s debut feature Paradise Hills has definitely been one of the surprises at the Sundance Film Festival: an indie gothic sci-fi fable is not something you see every day, after all. Especially not one that is a feminist parable, directed by a twenty-something first-time female director with a starring cast also made up of young women, including Emma Roberts, Eiza González, Awkwafina and Danielle Macdonald along with Milla Jovovich.

The audience is not let off the hook when a middle-aged woman played by Trine Dyrholm has an affair with her 17-year old stepson in Queen of Hearts. Danish director May el-Toukhy makes the audience see exactly what this means in very explicit sex scenes, in which the woman, a lawyer representing young victims of abuse, becomes an abuser herself.

Documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney has, over the course of his career, made many movies about disruptive figures — sometimes controversial, though not always so — who have crossed over from their respective industries into the broader realms of social and cultural influence. In telling the stories of subjects as varied as Apple founder Steve Jobs, writer Hunter S.
