2022 Summer Movies and Series

Once upon a time, there was a young man determined to be a filmmaker. He had studied Physics and English at Fullerton College in Brea, California, where his Canadian family had relocated, but soon was caught with a new passion: movies.

It’s finally Summer. And what says Summer more than a 60s beach movie like Gidget? The sunny fare includes romance, lovely and robust teenagers dancing in the sand to the sounds of surf music, and the freshest of oceans in the background.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Outfest kicks off its 2022 film festival in Los Angeles from July 14-24, unspooling 200 narratives, documentaries, short films, episodics, festival favorites, and a total of 42 world premieres spanning every genre and representing 29 countries. One such film is Unidentified Objects by Colombian director Juan Felipe Zuleta.

Dirty Dancing had it all: star-crossed love, familial drama, sweaty, pretty people dancing, and a wildly popular soundtrack—all set against the backdrop of the serene Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. The film was based on screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein's own childhood, and the premise was simple: in the summer of 1963, do-gooder Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is vacationing with her superficial family, including her judgmental father, played by Jerry Orbach, at an upscale, mostly-Jewish resort.

In the summer of 1994, HFPA journalists conducted interviews about The River Wild, an action-adventure thriller directed by Curtis Hanson. In the film, Gail Hartman, a history teacher and former river guide played by Meryl Streep, takes her son Roarke (played by 10-year-old Joseph Mazzello) on a river rafting vacation in Idaho.
