66 Berlin Film Festival

En el marco de la 66 Edición del Festival Internacional de Cine de Berlín (Berlinale), el pasado martes, 16 de febrero, el Instituto Cervantes de Berlín, el Instituto Iberoamericano de Berlín y la Unidad Técnica del Programa Ibermedia organizaron una serie de eventos en la capital alemana, con el propósito de celebrar la alta participación de películas iberoamericanas en el Festival, explorar la percepción que tienen los propios cineastas y productores de la industria regional y debatir sobre como traspasar las fronteras nacionales y dar el salto a la distribución internacional ante la exuberancia y pluralidad de miradas del cine iberoamericano. Un debate que invitaba a reflexionar sobre si es la profusión de representaciones e imágenes lo que complica su acceso al mercado y sobre como hacer que las plataformas cinematográficas sirvan para dar mayor visibilidad al fértil cine iberoamericano.

The hot and the cold of it!  The black and the white of it! With temperatures hovering in the low 30s in Berlin you’d think covering up would be a no brainer, but apparently stars are made of sterner stuff than we, mere mortals, because the Berlin Film Festival not only hosted a slew of great movies, but also saw women on the red carpet pretending it was Hollywood hot.    The guys seemed perfectly prepared as a suit allows style and protection from the chilly temps, but even during the day as things warmed to a toasty 40 degrees range, women still seemed to choose image over practicality, with some stars going for minis and naked legs.

As the Berlinale enters its 5th day and film theatres are filling up with film critics and movie fans, the Berlin International Film Festival is hosting the European Film Market. In its tenth year at the Martin-Gropius Bau Center, this year’s EFM presented Industry debates focussing on current issues in the film and media industry.

Coming after the Golden Globes and Sundance, the Berlin Film Festival opens the international season for personal, independent cinema. As Globes celebrate the year that was, and Sundance presents a first batch of projects, Berlin gets the ball rolling internationally.

The 66th Berlin film festival opened on February 11, having secured a number of high-profile participants and screenings for its ten-day run. Hollywood stars such as George Clooney and Channing Tatum graced the red carpet on its opening night, while Meryl Streep is presiding on the festival jury as it deliberates over the winner of the top prize, the Golden Bear, and the legacy of such high-profile figures as Alan Rickman, David Bowie and Ettore Scola are celebrated in special tribute events.
