76th Cannes Film Festival

Hosted by Chiara Mastroianni, actress and daughter of Catherine Deneuve, the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival 2023 took place this Tuesday, May 16, and featured both the much-anticipated arrival of Johnny Depp on the red carpet to promote Maïwenn’s new film, Jeanne du Barry, and the presentation of the honorary Palme d’Or to actor Michael Douglas in celebration of his extraordinary career. For the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, the opening ceremony had been eagerly awaited, and for good reason – this year, the ceremony was marked by a distinct whiff of scandal attending it.

John C. Reilly, who made his acting debut in Casualties of War (1989) by Brian De Palma, will serve as president of the jury of the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival 2023.

Day of Events Features Panel Discussions on Red Carpet Fashion and Saving Our Oceans The Golden Globes®, Hollywood’s premier global entertainment award, announced a “Golden Globes Day” at the historic American Pavilion at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, along with the sponsorship of this year’s Queer Night Party. The “Golden Globe Awards Day” at The American Pavilion will take place on Monday, May 22, 2023, and feature two panels hosted by the Golden Globes.

The Black List partnered with Canal+, Vivendi, the Festival de Cannes, the Universite Cote d'Azur and the City of Cannes to bring back the prestigious personalized program to Cannes 2023. This year, the Résidence will host six inspiring filmmakers who have received tailored individual support to write their first screenplay for either their first or second feature film.

As the director of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Frémaux can be rightly credited for having championed many emerging international talents over the years, while nurturing veteran filmmakers and, more recently, taking risks by saying no to streamers if they refuse to have theatrical distribution.   A week prior to the opening of the festival, he spoke via Zoom to the Hollywood Foreign Press to explain how this 76th edition will be different.

Legendary actor Michael Douglas will be on hand at the Cannes Film Festival to receive the prestigious Honorary Palme d’Or. To commemorate the Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actor-producer’s career, the documentary Michael Douglas, The Prodigal Son, will be presented at the festival on May 14 and May 16.
