Viola Davis on “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”

Viola Davis is an established performer with a long list of commanding characters among her many credits, including Annalise Keating in the hit small screen legal thriller How To Get Away With Murder, which last year wrapped its sixth and final season. But it’s still astonishing to behold the boldness and sheer dominating energy she brings to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, in a role for which Davis recently received a Golden Globe nomination, her sixth overall, for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.

Two of Us (France/USA): In Converstaion with Filippo Meneghetti

France-based Italian director Filippo Meneghetti picked an unlikely theme for his debut: the love story between Nina (Barbara Sukowa) and Madeleine (Martine Chevallier), both in their seventies. Yet, even though Two Of Us constitutes a rare occasion in cinema’s canon, it fits right in with a brand new trend that seeks to unveil the struggles of women as they painstakingly emerge out of their homebound obscurity.

Nominee Profile 2021: Andy Samberg, “Palm Springs”

A fun, imaginative, and thought-provoking work, smart enough to embrace the realization that priorities in life can and do change with the passing of time, Palm Springs is the recipient of two 2021 Golden Globes nominations, including one for Andy Samberg for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Smartly scripted by Andy Siara and directed with aplomb by Max Barbakow, Palm Springs serves up a finely balanced mixture of loose-limbed ribaldry, armchair philosophizing, and emotionally resonant melancholy, and was acquired for distribution by Hulu out of the Sundance Film Festival in 2020, in what was a record-setting deal at the time.
