Doing the Work is a series profiling key recipients of HFPA Philanthropy The Executive Director of Los Angeles-based Women In Film LA – Kirsten Schaffer – was an LGBTQ activist from her early youth. Programming film festivals was a way to channel her energies since she quickly realized that “stories have the power to change hearts and minds, and that cultural change precedes political change”.

On October 19t the annual Hollywood in Vienna gala honored film composer Hans Zimmer with the Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award. Zimmer has scored more than 150 films including Dunkirk, Driving Miss Daisy, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Gladiator, The Thin Red Line, Rain Man, Inception and Thelma and Louise.

HFPA Grantee In 1992, in the wake of the LA riots, producer Dorothy Thompson created Streetlights, a nonprofit organization which today has a proven track record of bringing a skilled, ethnically diverse workforce to the behind-the-camera world of films, television, commercials and other media platforms. As a Job Training, Job Placement and Career Advancement organization, Streetlight’s mission is to create careers, not just jobs, for underrepresented young women and men from diverse backgrounds, while increasing diversity throughout the entertainment industry.

HFPA Grantee The Department of Cinema and Television Arts of California State University, Northridge – better known as CSUN – is one of the “oldest” grantees of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, 22 years to be exact. It is one of HFPA’s inaugural university programs, providing institutional grants and film production fellowships for students, a mostly working-class constituency in need of help.

HFPA Grantee Kids In The Spotlight (KITS) is a non-profit organization that provides motivational training in film for foster children and youth (ages 11-19). KITS works with Foster Group Home Agencies around Los Angeles County and provides services to two-four group homes per year.

In January the Hollywood Foreign Press Association  announced the award of a $2 million endowment to California State University Northridge to support the school’s acclaimed Department of Cinema and Television Arts. The grant is part of the Hollywood Foreign Press’ commitment to fostering excellence and diversity in film arts education.
