While Lawrence of Arabia has become an enduring classic almost 60 years after winning six Golden Globes, the film could have looked very different if director David Lean had gotten one of his first choices for the starring role.

Of all the stars who illuminated the sky over Hollywood in a short burst of light, Marilyn Monroe is still the most radiant. Burned into our retinas and collective consciousness, her portraits and poses are ever-present — so much so that it might even be possible to imagine her appearance at the Golden Globes on the evening of Monday, March 5, 1962.

On February 23, 1956, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association held the 13th Golden Globes at the Cocoanut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. The lavish nightclub, known as Hollywood’s “first playground of the stars,” was the top venue of the Golden Globes for 10 of the next 12 years.

In the 1950s, there were a few years when multiple films were awarded the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film (now Best Non-English Language Film), and 1955 was one of those years. The 12th Golden Globes were held on February 24, 1955, at the Ambassador Hotel, and, befitting the organization’s international roots, four foreign films were voted the winners by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The 1954 awards were held jointly by the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association (HFCA) and the Foreign Press Association of Hollywood (FPAH), the two organizations that in 1955 would merge to form the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The invitation came from the International Press of Hollywood, presenting the Golden Globe and World Film Favorites Awards for 1953, and took place on Friday, January 22, 1954, at Club Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica.
