Between 1948 and 1983 Golden Globes were awarded in a special category of “New Star of the Year” conceived to recognize young actors making a mark in their early roles. In this series, the HFPA’s Phil Berk highlights those that would follow their auspicious starts with distinguished careers.

Arthur Hiller, Golden Globe winner for directing Love Story  (1970) has died, age 92 after a long and illustrious career, that included directing over 70 movies of every genre. Love Story was Hiller's most known, popular and commercially successful: it was nominated for seven Oscars (but won only one, best score, for French composer Francis Lai) and for seven Golden Globes, where it did much better, winning in five categories ( thus tying with four other movies for most Golden Globes wins): Best Motion Picture-Drama; Best Director for Hiller; Best Score for Lai; Best Screenplay for Erich Segal and Best Actress for Ali McGraw (her co-star, Ryan O'Neill lost to George C.
