Avatar: The Way of Water

In the wake of the protests from the Chinese against the government’s draconian ‘zero Covid’ policy, China has begun easing restrictions like mass testing and unilateral lockdowns. However, AP reports that a resurgence of the virus in some areas of China was reported yesterday.

IMAX is going to benefit enormously from China’s release of Avatar: The Way of Water. According to The Hollywood Reporter, its CEO Richard Gelfond addressed the Wells Fargo TMT Summit last Tuesday and predicted huge returns at the box office going by the presales numbers and the performance of the first Avatar in 2010 which earned $200 million in China.

As expected, Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in China and now has an official date – December 16, showing in regular and IMAX format. (It is the international release date for all territories.

Avatar, the most successful film of all time, returns to theaters where audiences can experience this sci-fi fantasy visual spectacle the way James Cameron intended. The film fueled several technological advances in the industry, such as motion capture used by actors during the filming process, and proved that original ideas can be a huge success.

China Daily reported on August 29 that director James Cameron showed an exclusive clip of Avatar: The Way of Water in Beijing on August 19, along with a video greeting attendees from the China Film Group who were present. The clip was in the CINITY format of 3D, 4K, and high-frame-rate, and was screened at the CINITY Lab of China Film.
