Gru is definitely rising. After weeks of slumping revenues, Minions: The Rise of Gru has brought a breath of fresh air.

German humor rules the chart again. Jordan Peele breaks into the top ten.

Moon Man, the blockbuster Chinese sci-fi comedy, has sold over 50 million tickets in just over two weeks of release and is breaking box office records in covid times. For the weekend, it earned $31.

Bullet Train is the new number 1 at the box office in France. Directed by David Leitch with Brad Pitt, Joey King, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bullet Train is an action comedy about five assassins aboard a fast-moving bullet train who find out their missions have something in common.

Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train may have sped to the top of the domestic box office but the big news was Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick has zoomed past Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s Titanic to become the seventh all-time biggest hit in North America. And with $662 million in domestic ticket sales, the Top Gun sequel looks like it will also dethrone Avengers: Infinity War, which earned $678 million, and become the sixth highest grossing movie of all time in the United States and Canada.

For the fifth consecutive week,  Thor: Love and Thunder leads the Italian Box Office. But this time the drop in overall revenues is of no small concern.

Chinese sci-fi comedy Moon Man, continued its domination of the Chinese box office, revitalizing the theatrical industry. It has already made $297.

Finally, some real shakeup in the charts: a German crime comedy kicked the Minions off the top spot, and a US-made action comedy debuted in third place. Germany’s number one film is Guglhupfgeschwader – to translate this funny dialectic title, one needs to explain: a Guglhupf is a bundt cake, Geschwader means squadron, but the real meaning is found in the story.

Thor: Love and Thunder is again number 1 at the box office in France. Directed by Taika Waititi with Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale, the movie is about Thor fighting Gorr the God Butcher who intends to make the gods extinct.

As everybody waits to board Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train next weekend, it was an unexceptional period at the box office. DC League of Super-Pets, an animation action-adventure with a voice cast led by Dwayne Johnson (Krypto, canine pal of Superman, voiced by John Krasinski) and Kevin Hart (Ace, one of the shelter pets who also have superpowers), opened on top with a very pet-friendly $23 million.
