Golden Globes 2023 Non-English Language Film Submissions

Imagine a government that encourages its elderly to be euthanized to remedy the problems of an aging society. That’s the premise of Plan 75, filmmaker Chie Hayakawa’s feature directing debut, which she wrote with Jason Gray.

In Park Chan-wook’s romantic-mystery film, Decision to Leave, detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) falls in love and gets obsessed with his suspect, the widow Seo-rae (Tang Wei). Directed and produced by Chan-wook who co-wrote with Jeong Seo-kyeong, the movie bagged the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Adapted from the original crime novel by Venezuelan writer Eduardo Sánchez Rugeles, Jezabel is a twisted thriller that provides an inimitable window into a culture filled with debauchery and class. When the film was showcased recently at the Miami Film Festival, the author talked about his journey into the genre.

Written and directed by Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer, Corsage is a fictional period film set in the late 1870s. It premiered at the Un Certain Regard section of the 75th Cannes Film Festival.

The director and screenwriter of the highly acclaimed Kazakh drama Goliath, Adilkhan Yerzhanov, has been a two-time participant in the Cannes Film Festival's Official Program (The Owners, 2014, Official Selection, and The Gentle Indifference of the World, 2018, Un Certain Regard). He won an Asia Pacific Screen award in 2019 for Achievement in Directing for A Dark, Dark Man.

The story centers on a 25-year-old woman, Freddie (Park Ji-min), who was born in South Korea but speaks no Korean. She is looking for her birth parents after being adopted more than 20 years ago.

Actor-filmmaker Radhakrishnan Parthiban’s latest movie, Shadow of the Night, is the portrait of one man and his dark, disturbing life, in which Fate is always turning the tables on him. A hapless man named Nandu, played by director Parthipan, is a person who continually encounters failure and disappointment.

A dark coming-of-age thriller, The Box is the latest offering from Venezuelan director Lorenzo Vigas, and stars Hatzin Navarrete, who marks his acting debut. Navarrete plays Hatzin, a teenager from Mexico City who travels to a remote desert town north of Mexico to search for his father’s remains, which he believes to be buried in a hidden mass grave.

Freda is the Creole-language debut feature film by actress, singer and filmmaker Gessica Geneus. She also wrote the script to the film, which portrays Freda (Néhémie Bastien), a young woman who struggles to find hope in a country full of despair, violence and turbulence.
