It was a room full of enthusiastic young students at the Writers Guild Theater on Sunday night as the CSUN Cinema and Television Department unveiled the winners of the documentary and narrative shorts thesis projects from the graduating class of 2017. Earlier this year that department of the California State University of Northridge received a grant of 2 million dollars from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to be assigned to their television production studios and for student scholarships.

As part of the HFPA mission to contribute to organizations connected with the entertainment industry and involved in educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities, five HFPA members recently visited USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism to participate in a panel moderated by Senior Lecturer and former TV Guide senior editor, Mary Murphy. The class was titled ‘Specialized Journalism: The Arts’ and our panel consisted of Jenny Cooney (Australia), Silvia Bizio (Italy), Scott Orlin (Germany), Marlene Von Arx (Switzerland) and Elisabeth Sereda (Austria).

Unlike the Academy, the HFPA hands out two Best Movie awards: Drama, and Comedy or Musical. Let's look at the record.

Four HFPA members triumphed in the 9th Annual National Arts and Entertainment Journalism (NAEJ) Awards gala held last December 4 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The competition, presented by the Los Angeles Press Club (LAPC), drew more than 1,000 entries.

New faces and old friends of the Globes came out in West Hollywood to celebrate our trio of Miss Golden Globes, Sophia, Sistine and Scarlet Stallone (accompanied by proud papa Sylvester) and the kickoff to Awards Season with the HFPA Young Hollywood Party. Ramzy Malouki reports.

The annual GALACC gala was held at the Beverly Hilton to celebrate the foundation whose mission is to support Los Angeles City College through fundraising and financing student financial aid services and academic programs at Los Angeles’ oldest public community college. With one of the most diverse student bodies in the country LACC serves almost 20000 students, most of whom depend on financial aid for access to higher education.

In September 2016, a delegation of the HFPA members was once again invited to Finland to attend the 29th edition of the Helsinki International Film Festival (HIFF). This year members of the HFPA delegation were given the same warm welcome by our hosts: Sara Norberg, Executive Director of HIFF; Laura Laaksonen, Finnish Film Affair Producer; Jaana Puskala, head of International Department of the Finnish Film Foundation: Juulia Klemola, Finnish Film Affair Coordinator, Anni Wessman, Finnish FilmWeek Producer and Anna-Maria Rusi, in charge of all scheduling.
