Katherine Helmond, who was nominated three times for a Golden Globe and won it twice, died at age 89. Both awards were for playing roles that were far removed from Helmond's life and character.

Golden Globe winner Neil Simon, iconic playwright and screenwriter, has died, aged 91. One of the most prolific and influential American writers of stage and screen, Simon was nominated for a Golden Globe-Best Screenplay-Motion Picture three times: in 1973, for The Heartbreak Kid (directed by Elaine May); in 1976 for The Sunshine Boys (directed by Herbert Ross), and in 1978 for The Goodbye Girl, which he won.

His signature early Czech movie, Loves of a Blonde (1967) was nominated for Best Foreign Language Motion Picture by both the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Academy of Motion Pictures.

John Hurt, versatile actor of screen and stage, Golden Globe winner, dies at 77. Arguably one of the most multifaceted of actors, Hurt burst on the world stage as the co-star of Alan Parker's Midnight Express (1978), a fact-based movie starring Brad Davis as an American student caught smuggling drugs and imprisoned in a Turkish jail.

Mary Tyler Moore (December 29, 1936 – January 25, 2017) first captured the hearts of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 1965.   A year earlier the Dick Van Dyke Show had won the Globe for Best TV Show-Comedy.

So many friends and colleagues took their leave last year that 2016 may be remembered as the cruelest year in Hollywood. And so many were part of the extended Golden Globes family.

Marshall was born to a family on the margins of show business.

Garry Marshal left a deep mark on American film, television and on the popular culture with shows like Mork and Mindy, Laverne and Shirley and Happy Days. For many years the programs he created defined the art of sitcom.

Peter Shaffer, Golden Globe winner for Amadeus, is dead at 90. Shaffer, a leading British playwright who collected a Golden Globe for the screen adaptation of his play Amadeus, died in County Cork, Ireland where he traveled to celebrate his 90th birthday.
