We asked leading experts in the field to enlighten film fans about the scope of the crisis threatening a vital part of the world's cultural heritage, before screening of a restored copy of Sergio Leone’s Fistful of Dollars at the historic and majestic Theater at Ace (previously the United Artists movie palace on Broadway in Los Angeles).

On March 9, 2019, the HFPA hosted a summit to spotlight the crisis threatening the world's film heritage. Luminaries in the film preservation field discussed the decay endangering films worldwide and the need to restore, archive and protect them before it’s too late.

“The Indians are coming” is a phrase which no longer holds true in Hollywood as the Indians have already arrived and are busy leaving their make on the film industry. But it was not an easy path, the infant steps took years.

Of several European directors who parlayed their success in Europe after the Second World War into a Hollywood career, Forman was arguably the most prominent, successful and consistent. As part of the special events to celebrate this year’s 75th anniversary of the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is hosting a special panel entitled Golden Globe-Winning TV Game Changers. As the first Hollywood group to recognize both film and television, the HFPA was early to embrace the “new medium” back in 1962, when the first award went to the Dick Powell Show.

It’s hard to understand that such a seminal event as Billie Jean King, the number one Women’s Tennis player at the time, taking on a man and beating him at the height of the woman’s movement, has faded from popular culture to such an extent that many young women are unaware who this iconic figure is. Battle of the Sexes, a new movie about King's life at that time should put her and the event back into the public zeitgeist.

Now in it’s 19th year, the Taipei International Film Festival kicked off its opening night with The Great Buddha +, directed by Huang Hsin-yao.  The sold-out film is Huang’s first feature, based on his Golden Horse award nominated short film of the same name.

One of the themes of War for the Planet of the Apes is the humanization of animals and the animalization of humans. Costume designer Melissa Bruning has a multilayered task – she’s a key element in the process of clothing motion-captured creatures and determining the color and design of their motion-capture suits (which the wizards of Weta Workshop will render as apes); and she also has the creative oversight on the costuming of flesh and bone characters, adding to the whole visual atmosphere of the movie, reinterpreting military paraphernalia, conveying power and, at the same time, evoking emotions.
