LA Press Freedom Week

As a press organization, the HFPA is committed to supporting the First Amendment and freedom of the press worldwide.   To date, we have granted or pledged $6,910,000 to organizations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, the Dag Hammarskjold Fund for Journalists, PEN America, ProPublica, the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, the International Women's Media Foundation, Military Veterans in Journalism, the International Documentary Association, Inquire First, the Los Angeles Press Club, InsideClimate News and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association congratulates Russian journalist and editor of Novaja Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov and Filipino founder of the investigative journalism website Rappler, Maria Ressa, for winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Both have been unsilenced voices for truth in the face of authoritarianism, currently on the rise in many parts of the world.

Washington Post reporter and CNN contributor, American-Iranian Jason Rezaian was The Post’s correspondent in Tehran from 2012 to 2016.  He was jailed by the Iranian government in 2014 and charged with espionage.

A Filipina investigative reporter and founder of the Manila-based news site Rappler, Maria Ressa has previously worked with CNN and ABS-CBN. For many years Ressa focused on terrorism in Southeast Asia.
