Out of the Archives, 1998: Emma Thompson on “Primary Colors”

Emma Thompson, two times Golden Globe winner out of ten nominations, spoke to the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press in 1998 about Primary Colors directed by Mike Nichols, where she played a political wife modeled after Hillary Clinton opposite John Travolta as Bill Clinton. The film is about the 1992 Presidential campaign, but the actress also addressed the 1998 impeachment trial that was explored in the 2021 series Impeachment: American Crime Story.

Out of the Archives, 1997: Alicia Silverstone on Loving England and Playing Batgirl

Alicia Silverstone stars in three new films this year – the terror/adventure The Requin (on Amazon), the comedy Senior Year and soon, the crime drama Reptile. Some time ago, the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press interviewed her twice, in 1997: when she was 20 years old, about playing Batgirl in Batman & Robin directed by Joel Schumacher – with George Clooney as Batman and Chris O’Donnell as Robin –  and when she had produced, through her company, First Kiss Productions, the romantic comedy Excess Baggage in which she acted opposite Benicio del Toro.

Out of the Archives, 2001-2004: Colin Firth on playing Mr. Darcy

Colin Firth, winner of the Best Actor Golden Globe for The King’s Speech (2010) by Tom Hooper, spoke to the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2001 and 2004 about playing Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy in the TV miniseries Pride and Prejudice (1995) from the 1831 novel by Jane Austen, and a modern version named Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) with Renée Zellweger from Helen Fielding’s novels.

Out of the Archives, 2001: Jude Law on Russians and War

Jude Law, four times Golden Globe nominee, spoke with the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2001 about playing a Russian sniper at the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II in Enemy at the Gates, written and directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. The British actor reprised his role as a young Aldus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022), directed by David Yates.

Out of the Archives, 2005: Jake Gyllenhaal on “Brokeback Mountain”

Jake Gyllenhaal, twice nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor, talked to the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2005 about Brokeback Mountain directed by Ang Lee from the 1997 short story by Annie Proulx. The son of screenwriter/director parents Stephen Gyllenhaal and Naomi Foner, the younger brother of actress/director/screenwriter Maggie Gyllenhaal, Golden Globe winner and five-time nominee, Jake grew up in a show business family engaged in politics, so he was aware of the cultural implications of portraying a cowboy opposite Heath Ledger in this landmark same-sex love story.
