Screenwriter-producer-director Sofia Coppola mixes fiction, stories from other people and her personal reflections in her latest movie, On the Rocks. The film tells the story of a daughter (Rashida Jones) and father (Bill Murray) as they explore New York together in an attempt to mend their fractured relationship.

The Beguiled, which premiered in Cannes last month earned Golden Globe-winning director Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, 2004) a Best Director award on the Croisette. That was only the second time the accolade had gone to a woman in the festivals’ 70-year history (the first, in case you’re wondering, was Jane Campion).

Golden Globe winner Sofia Coppola met the HFPA after her Cannes triumph – winning the  Best Director for her latest movie, The Beguiled. Her husband, Thomas Mars, leader of the French band Phoenix, collaborated with the soundtrack, so we asked Sofia how important music is in this movie.

Sofia Coppola celebrated her 43rd birthday a day late (because of opening night) in a restaurant on the Croisette with fellow jury members Leila Hatami, ex-Bondgirl Carole Bouquet, Willem Dafoe and president Jane Campion. The only woman to have ever won the Palme d’Or, Campion was very vocal about the lack of women behind the camera: “I think you’d have to say there’s some inherent sexism in the industry.
