This is Bernal’s second nomination for the show; he won last year in the role of Maestro Rodrigo de Souza, conductor of the New York Symphony.   The character is loosely based on Gustavo Dudamel who coached Bernal to actually conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

Anderson stars in the comedy about an upper middle-class African-American family living in a primarily white neighborhood who worries that his kids are not aware enough of their heritage.   The show deals with topics like racism, interracial dating, police brutality and homosexuality, but he insists the writers don’t rip stories from the headlines.

As the distraught mother of a missing boy in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, Winona Ryder has one of the best roles of her career in the Netflix series Stranger Things, receiving her third Golden Globe nomination.   She had previously won as best supporting actress in 1994 for The Age of Innocence.
