Before going on to a brilliant Hollywood career – and four Best Director Golden Globe nominations – Rob Reiner found fame as the beloved Michael Stivic (aka Meathead) on All in the Family. That multi Globe-nominated sitcom (including five for Reiner) is now routinely held up as a seminal example of television comedy with a social conscience.

Sorry to Bother You is a provocative and revolutionary comedy from the mind of Boots Riley, best-known as the lead vocalist for The Coup. The film was shot in Oakland in 2017 and released by Annapurna Pictures.

Amy Adams stars as the lead character of Camille in Sharp Objects, adapted for HBO from the book of the same title – the debut novel by Gillian Flynn. Flynn was of course nominated for a Best Screenplay Golden Globe for David Fincher’s Gone Girl.

Kevin Costner stars as John Dutton, the powerful patriarch of a family of ranchers, in the new Paramount Television drama series Yellowstone.  Dutton controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States but constantly plays a vicious and tricky game to maintain control over conflicting interests with politicians, oil and lumber corporations, and the Native American reservation that borders his land.

The idea of geriatric pro Basketball legends teaming up to play again started as a series of popular Pepsi Max ads, but now finds life in a full-length feature film comedy called Uncle Drew which stars NBA All Star Kyrie Irving who teams with his old Basketball squad (played by former NBA players Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson and former WNBA player Lisa Leslie) to hit the court for one more glorious round. The legendary Shaquille O'Neal told HFPA members Margaret Gardiner and Mirai Konishi how much he enjoyed getting back on the court for the film in this exclusive interview.

Italian helmer Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah, Suburra) takes over from Denis Villeneuve for the follow up to the 2015 narco-thriller Sicario. In front of the camera Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro reprise their roles for a second installment of what could become a proper franchise.

Alison Brie was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as Ruth Wilder (aka “Zoya the Destroya”) on the first season of GLOW, the Netflix series created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch. The series about the eponymous eighties female wrestling television show has built its success as a story of female solidarity and empowerment.

As a queer artist – he was the first trans director on the Golden Globe-winning Transparent – Silas Howard brings a special outlook to A Kid Like Jake, the story of two young Brooklyn parents grappling with their kindergartner’s gender fluidity. The film stars Globe-winners Jim Parsons and Claire Danes as the two progressive parents who only have their child’s best interests at heart but who nevertheless contend with self-doubt and difficult choices as they navigate the first steps into school and societal judgment.
