Men in Black: International led an overall slow weekend at the domestic box office with a series low $28. 5 million US bow.

Two previously successful franchises opened their most recent titles this past weekend – and failed. One of them – Universal/Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 – technically became a franchise with this sequel and, apparently, went fine, taking the top of the North American (the US and Canada) box office with $47.

Godzilla: King of Monsters stomped into theaters this weekend with $179 million in global receipts. Its US take of $49 million, while good enough for first place, wasn't exactly earth-shattering.

Disney's Aladdin got all of its wishes and soared off to a $114. 3 million start over Memorial Day weekend in the US.

It's hard to throw around superlatives with a two-and-a-half billion-dollar movie still parked on the global charts, but John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum had a fine weekend by its own standards and landed first in the US with $57. 1 million.

This weekend one film finally had a chance to overtake Avengers: Endgame as the monstrous hit which Marvel spent a decade making finally slowed down at home and abroad. Detective Pikachu came very close to unseating the reigning box office champion, but its $58 million opening was just short of the incumbent film's $63 million third frame take.

On its second week out, Avengers: Endgame has met and surpassed all expectations, easily sailing past Titanic ($2. 187 billion) to become the second-highest worldwide grosser with $2.

After a small stumble with Dumbo earlier this month, the empire has struck back, and Disney is once again on top of the charts. Avengers: Endgame put up a record-shattering $1.

It was the worst Easter box office in 25 years. Out of 16 weekends so far in the current year, this was also the 13th time in which results were below those of 2018.

At the domestic box office this weekend the biggest new story was Universal's Little trouncing Lionsgate's big-budget Hellboy reboot. The winning underdog took $15 million on its US debut, finishing second behind Shazam! and soundly humiliating its opening day rival.
