Star power is back at the box office as Dwayne Johnson, Julia Roberts, and George Clooney returned with movies that dominated the box office domestically and internationally. Johnson’s Black Adam scooped up $67 million, which was bigger than predicted and ended up being his strongest North American debut as a solo star.

Halloween Ends continued the supremacy of the horror genre at both the domestic and international box office. The supposedly final film of Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, spooked up $41.

Two debuting films, a comedy-drama by Christian Bale and David O. Russell and an animated/live-action hybrid were no match to Smile, the horror flick which smiled its way to stay on top at the North American charts.

A movie that was released in 1975 cracked the top ten while another film from the more recent past climbed back to number one. It was déjà vu time as Spider-Man: No Way Home, released in December last year, went back home to the top spot with $6 million.

Enough people RSVP’d and watched The Invitation to make the film take the top spot at the box office. However, The Invitation’s $7 million ticket receipts made for the lowest-earning number one movie since May 2021’s Spiral.

Beast was no match for Dragon Ball. In an unusual development, an anime film, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero topped the domestic box office and beat Idris Elba’s Beast.

Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train may have sped to the top of the domestic box office but the big news was Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick has zoomed past Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s Titanic to become the seventh all-time biggest hit in North America. And with $662 million in domestic ticket sales, the Top Gun sequel looks like it will also dethrone Avengers: Infinity War, which earned $678 million, and become the sixth highest grossing movie of all time in the United States and Canada.

As everybody waits to board Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train next weekend, it was an unexceptional period at the box office. DC League of Super-Pets, an animation action-adventure with a voice cast led by Dwayne Johnson (Krypto, canine pal of Superman, voiced by John Krasinski) and Kevin Hart (Ace, one of the shelter pets who also have superpowers), opened on top with a very pet-friendly $23 million.

Nope was dope at the box office. With the Daniel Kaluuya-led horror/mystery/sci-fi debuting at the top, all three Jordan Peele movies, including Get Out and Us, bowed at number one.

Thor: Love and Thunder thundered globally with $302 million. And also, worldwide, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic: World Dominion, and Minions: The Rise of Gru are nearing $1.
