If not for Doctor Strange 2, the Italian box office would have marked one of the worst weeks since the beginning of the year. But Marvel Studios' latest blockbuster worked like a magnet, attracting over a million fans and bringing some oxygen to the asphyctic market.

As predicted, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness caused a box office frenzy and set several precedents: the best bow of a Disney film in the pandemic era; and the biggest opening figures so far this year. The Marvel Cinematic Universe epic, respected filmmaker Sam Raimi’s first movie after almost ten years, made $185 million, which was on the high end of expectations.

Magic beat magic at last weekend’s box office when another Marvel hero took the lead over the beasts in Germany. And opera fans proved once again that they love a classic Puccini.

While Disney is celebrating the $265 million international opening week numbers for Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there is no China release for the movie.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore remains in 1st place. Directed by David Yates, and starring Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, and Mads Mikkelsen, the movie about Albus Dumbledore’s new assignment to Newt grossed $2,309,889.

With Doctor Strange madness not starting until next weekend, it was quiet both domestically and internationally. But the overseas box office universe saw more action.

Many questions arose in the mind of Italian cinema-goers when confronted with the latest Covid measures. Since May 1st face masks have become “highly recommended” rather than mandatory in all social activities, from eating and drinking in restaurants and clubs, to shopping or visiting a museum.

The Germans love costumes, and the Austrians rediscover their own humor. Both countries turned patriotic and supported their own productions in this week’s top ten.

Covid lockdowns continue in China affecting the entire economy. Shanghai has been shuttered for over a month.
