At the weekend box office Disney’s Mexican themed Coco finally moved North of the border and took first pace from Justice League with a $49 million opening run. The five-day Thanksgiving holiday take was $71.

This weekend Justice League started its global run with a bit less oomph than expected while Lionsgate’s underdog tale Wonder amazed as counterprogramming and surprised industry analysts with its impressive start. Warner Bros.

In its second week of release Thor: Ragnarok took again first place on the US box office chart with $56. 6 million, while second place belonged to newly opened Daddy’s Home 2.

There was little surprise this weekend as all of the world’s box office headlines were dominated by Thor: Ragnarok’s US launch. Industry analysts and Disney/Marvel execs were predicting a $100 million opening after Thursday’s preview showings but strong word of mouth and overwhelmingly positive reviews pushed the Chris Hemsworth led film to $121 million.

This weekend Thor: Ragnarok dropped its hammer on 36 territories while Jigsaw kept the horror train rolling and Geostorm got downgraded to a category zero in the US. Disney and Marvel’s superhero smash opened to $107.

In this weekend’s box office race four major contenders were swept aside by Tyler Perry’s $21. 7 million comedy Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.

This weekend’s home box office champ Happy Death Day served up frights and kicked off the oncoming Halloween movie season early with a strong $26. 5 million, and another $5 million overseas.

Coming first is always the goal for a new release but sometimes winning is not enough. Sony’s Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to Ridley Scott’s historic 1982 Sci-Fi masterpiece, opened at home this weekend to an unspectacular $31.

Los Angeles. Kingsman: The Golden Circle won another round at the international box office, adding over $50 million worldwide in its second outing.

Looks like the reports about the death of movie theaters, and of the communal experience of enjoying images of people larger than life on the big screen, have been greatly exaggerated after all. Just a few weeks after the summer’s dismal numbers and the failure of several blockbusters led analysts to predict the end was coming and that the future belonged to streaming and some other technology yet to come, September has turned into something of a miracle month for the industry.
