IMAX is going to benefit enormously from China’s release of Avatar: The Way of Water. According to The Hollywood Reporter, its CEO Richard Gelfond addressed the Wells Fargo TMT Summit last Tuesday and predicted huge returns at the box office going by the presales numbers and the performance of the first Avatar in 2010 which earned $200 million in China.

James Cameron’s Pandoran creatures couldn’t come soon enough, box office analysts expressed in their comments as the Thanksgiving weekend figures trickled in. While Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Black Adam continue to be bright spots, the recent Thanksgiving holiday numbers were considered among the worst.

As expected, Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in China and now has an official date – December 16, showing in regular and IMAX format. (It is the international release date for all territories.

Hitting the global benchmark of $500 million – $546. 3 million, to be exact – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever seems to be rallying moviegoers to the movie theaters in droves with the word that the film’s warriors chant: “Yibambe (hold fast)!” The domestic box office, where the sequel stayed on top in its second week, contributed $288 million to that $500 million-plus worldwide total so far.

The goal of being the No. 1 film territory in the world (which it held in 2020 and 2021) no longer seems a priority for the Chinese administration.

As expected, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever made a smashing debut and raked in $330 million globally. In the domestic box office race, director Ryan Coogler’s sequel to his 2018 blockbuster bowed with $180 million, the second biggest opening this year and the third in the COVID-19 era, after Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Sony reported last Wednesday that Where the Crawdads Sing has been approved for release in China on November 25. The film was released in the US in July and has made $50 million in international markets with a total gross of $140 million.
