Dirty Dancing had it all: star-crossed love, familial drama, sweaty, pretty people dancing, and a wildly popular soundtrack—all set against the backdrop of the serene Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. The film was based on screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein's own childhood, and the premise was simple: in the summer of 1963, do-gooder Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is vacationing with her superficial family, including her judgmental father, played by Jerry Orbach, at an upscale, mostly-Jewish resort.

In the summer of 1994, HFPA journalists conducted interviews about The River Wild, an action-adventure thriller directed by Curtis Hanson. In the film, Gail Hartman, a history teacher and former river guide played by Meryl Streep, takes her son Roarke (played by 10-year-old Joseph Mazzello) on a river rafting vacation in Idaho.

David Strathairn recently acted with Frances McDormand in Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland (2020), in Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley (2021) with Bradley Cooper and Toni Collette and now with Daisy Edgar-Jones in director Olivia Newman’s Where the Crawdads Sing (2022). Strathairn earned the first of his two Golden Globe nominations for his portrayal of Edward R.

Ryan Gosling will soon be seen in the action thriller The Gray Man (2022) directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, and next year we’ll see him as Ken, opposite Margot Robbie in Barbie (2023), directed by Greta Gerwig. Ryan Gosling won a Golden Globe as Best Actor in 2017, after four nominations, for his performance opposite Emma Stone in the musical La La Land written and directed by Damien Chazelle.
