Doing the Work is a series profiling key recipients of HFPA Philanthropy A beloved professor and now the interim Dean at California Institute for the Arts (CalArts) School of Film/Video, Abigail Severance is not your typical academic, even by film school standards. For her, it all started in the ‘90s in San Francisco when the queer culture was booming, and Severance discovered artistic expression through photography and poetry.

We at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are committed to transformational change.  Effective immediately, the Board – in consultation with outside advisors – will oversee reforms and be accountable for that change.

Anyone that has visited the Dodger Stadium Covid testing site in Los Angeles during these long pandemic months, knows the heroic work of CORE. The non-profit organization has provided free testing available to all comers, even as health and government institutions faltered under less than sterling leadership.

We are fully committed to ensuring our membership is reflective of the communities around the world who love film, tv and the artists inspiring and educating them.   We understand that we need to bring in Black members, as well as members from other underrepresented backgrounds, and we will immediately work to implement an action plan to achieve these goals as soon as possible.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press will be able to provide pro bono legal support and resources for a greater number of journalists and newsrooms, particularly those covering the coronavirus pandemic, nationwide protests against systemic racism and police brutality, and the aftermath of the 2020 election, thanks to more than $1. 2 million in combined grants from the Ford Foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Abrams Foundation, The Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation and TEGNA Foundation.
