Washington Post reporter and CNN contributor, American-Iranian Jason Rezaian was The Post’s correspondent in Tehran from 2012 to 2016.  He was jailed by the Iranian government in 2014 and charged with espionage.

A Filipina investigative reporter and founder of the Manila-based news site Rappler, Maria Ressa has previously worked with CNN and ABS-CBN. For many years Ressa focused on terrorism in Southeast Asia.

A staff reporter for one of Brazil’s biggest news outlets and a Washington correspondent for the newspaper Folha de São Paulo, Campos Mello was personally attacked in response to her coverage of allegations of local businessesmen’s interference in the electoral campaign of then-presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro. Dutch journalist Jan-Albert Hootsen has been working as a freelance out of Mexico City since 2009. Hootsen reports on national affairs and cultural and socio-economic issues for various Dutch and American media and is the Mexico Representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), in partnership with the Los Angeles Times, announced today the inaugural LA Press Freedom Week, taking place September 16-20, 2019 at several venues in Los Angeles, California. LA Press Freedom Week is a week-long slate of events that will spotlight conversations around the protection of the First Amendment and engage the public and the journalism community in and around Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced a returning initiative in which rising filmmakers from the 2019 Venice International Film Festival and the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival will be selected for a three-week residency program in partnership with Film Independent. For the second year in a row, the HFPA and Film Independent will host a three-week program geared at emerging and mid-career filmmakers selected from the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival and the TIFF Filmmaker Lab.

Lucky Livermore, 14 years old, representing The Pablove Foundation, was the youngest photographer among the press covering the red carpet parade before the recent HFPA Grants Dinner, but he had no match in courage and life experience. Pablove teaches photography to children with cancer, using the HFPA grant to provide cameras and lessons to hundreds of youngsters across the country.
