About the job What is the HFPA? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) was founded in 1943 – then known as the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association – by a group of entertainment journalists based in Los Angeles. During World War II, the non-profit organization established a cultural bridge between Tinseltown and millions around the world seeking an escape and inspiration through entertainment.

Director Satyajit Ray had no thought of making a sequel to Pather Panchali until the rapturous reception the film received, both critically and financially. Aparajito (The Unvanquished) would become the second in the Apu Trilogy, followed by Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) in 1959.

Standing in front of the same Westwood movie theater where his 1991 film New Jack City premiered 31 years ago, filmmaker Mario Van Peebles can’t help but reflect on that night as he celebrates the restored 35mm print opening the “Perpetratin’ Realism” program, sponsored by the American Cinematheque and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.   The blistering crime thriller and gangster movie opened in theatres on March 8, 1991 – four days after the world first saw the video of LAPD officers beating Rodney King, and the premiere became the setting for brawls and gun violence in New York, Chicago, and Las Vegas, resulting in at least one death.

Venice Arts, founded in the early 90s, is one of the most important organizations in fostering young talent in California. With eight full-time staff and around 10 part-time employees, it serves to ignite, expand, and transform the lives of LA’s low-income youth through photography and film.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP) is the leading national nonprofit providing free legal help to journalists and news organizations. For over 50 years, the RCFP has provided free legal representation and support to reporters, editors, documentary filmmakers, media lawyers, and others who use their resources all across the United States.

Between washing our dishes, watering our lawn, showering, doing our laundry or just cooling ourselves off from a hot day, the ability to easily access water is something most of us take for granted. But stepping outside our comfort zone to realize that the ability for many to do what we take for granted isn’t so easy.

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA), one of the HFPA grantees, champions emerging and diverse filmmakers and storytellers from around the world and provides a forum where filmmakers can be recognized for their contributions, have open audience discussions about their work and connect with industry professionals for insight on distribution, production and representation. We caught up with Larry Laboe, Co-Founder and Executive Director of NewFilmmakers Los Angeles, whose industry credits include producer for Ctrl (2009) and Fact Checkers Unit.

They hail from 12 countries in four continents united in their love for film making and an abiding passion for storytelling. The fellows of the 2022 HFPA Global Residency are the largest group yet in the program instituted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association four years ago in partnership with the Toronto and Venice film festivals and with Film Independent, which manages the Residency curriculum.
